Katie Britt

Katie Britt (full name: Katie Elizabeth Boyd Britt) is a Republican U.S. Senator from Alabama. She has served as the junior senator since January 3, 2023, alongside senior senator Tommy Tuberville.

She is notable for several historic firsts:

  • The first woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate from Alabama (previous female senators from the state were appointed).
  • The youngest Republican woman ever elected to the Senate.
  • One of the younger women overall elected to the chamber.

Born on February 2, 1982 (age 44 as of 2026), in Enterprise, Alabama, she grew up there and graduated from Enterprise High School. She earned a B.A. in political science (2004) and a J.D. (2013) from the University of Alabama. Before entering elected office, her career included:

  • Roles in Sen. Richard Shelby's office (including chief of staff from 2016–2018).
  • President and CEO of the Business Council of Alabama (2019–2021).
  • Work in private law practice.

In the Senate, she serves on key committees including Appropriations (where she chairs the Homeland Security Subcommittee), Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Judiciary, and Rules and Administration. Her priorities include border security, supporting small businesses, mental health access, educational freedom, regulating minors' social media use, agriculture, and defense issues. She is described as a champion for hardworking families, opportunity, and the American Dream, with faith and family central to her life (she is a Christian, wife, and mother of school-aged children).

She gained national attention in 2023 for delivering the Republican rebuttal to President Biden's State of the Union address from her kitchen in Montgomery, which drew both praise and parody (including an SNL skit portraying her as a "scary mom"). More recently, in 2026, she has been portrayed in the media as an emerging bipartisan dealmaker in a polarized environment, including work on immigration enforcement negotiations and commenting on President Trump's State of the Union address and DHS funding issues.

Her official Senate website is britt.senate.gov, and she is active on X (formerly Twitter) as @SenKatieBritt.
